There are lots of reasons, but we look forward to next season now.

Now, we’re catching up with developments in the circular economy, sailing and in particular Boat Recycling, which we’ve talked about before.

A promising initiative in South Hams is addressing the persistent issue of abandoned vessels in local waters. A recent pilot project has demonstrated practical ways to tackle this growing environmental challenge.

In spring 2024, Creekside Boatyard in Dartmouth undertook a systematic dismantling of an end-of-life sailing boat. The project proved that methodical disassembly and recycling is both viable and efficient. The team recovered 1,500 kg of Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) composite, along with valuable components including stainless steel rigging, bronze winches, and various electronic parts.

While the UK currently lacks commercial recycling options for boat hull composites, the project achieved a notable breakthrough. Using DEECOM® technology, the team successfully cleaned contaminated GRP fibres - a first of its kind achievement that opens possibilities for future upcycling.

Cllr John Mckay, Executive Member for Climate Change and Biodiversity, views this as an initial step in addressing the broader issue of abandoned vessels. The council aims to strengthen partnerships with harbour authorities, marinas and boat builders who directly face the environmental and financial impact of derelict boats.

James Scott-Anderson from Blue Parameters highlighted how collaboration between different sectors and new technology made the project successful. The approach offers a practical alternative to landfill disposal, supporting wider climate change objectives.

The initiative, supported by the Royal Yachting Association's Green Blue programme, sets a promising precedent for vessel recycling. Those wishing to report abandoned boats can do so through The Green Blue website.

Read the report here.

Anyone who spots an abandoned boat, can report it at The Green Blue website.

For over 150 years, the shipping forecast has been a staple of British radio.
