New sailing season, old problems, new solutions?
As the new sailing season kicks off, the Clue Pony team emerges from a winter of boat prep with a nagging question: what actually happens to a boat when it's done? With 30,000 GRP scrap boats already awaiting disposal and the material notoriously hard to recycle, the problem is bigger than most sailors realise. We round up the most interesting developments in boat recycling right now.

It's that time of year again. The covers are coming off, the to-do lists are getting longer, and somewhere between sanding the topsides and hunting for that one spanner, the Clue Pony team has been doing a fair amount of reading. One topic that kept resurfacing during the boat prep this winter — and one we've been quietly obsessed with for a while — is what actually happens to a boat when it reaches the end of its life. We've pulled together a few things that caught our eye.

Here's the thing most sailors don't think about when they're admiring a gleaming GRP hull on the water: that material is genuinely difficult to get rid of. Around 80 per cent of all boats built in the last 50 years are made of glass-reinforced plastic sea-help, and unlike steel, it can't simply be melted down and started again. The fibres bond inseparably with resins, and resins bond with everything else. The result? Estimates suggest there are at least 30,000 GRP scrap boats currently in need of disposal, and the number is growing. sea-help

The good news is that people are starting to take this seriously. On the commercial shipping side, the Hong Kong Convention on the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships came into force in June 2025 sea-help — a significant step towards ending the grim practice of running old tonnage onto Asian beaches and taking it apart by hand. Meanwhile, 16,000 ships are expected to need recycling over the next ten years, against a significant global shortage of capacity sea-help — which means there's genuine economic momentum building behind doing this properly.

For recreational boats, the brightest example right now is France. The APER system — backed by an eco-contribution paid by manufacturers on every new boat sold — means French boat owners can apply to have their old vessel disposed of completely free of charge. sea-help It works. Thirty-five approved centres are already operating across the country. It's the kind of joined-up thinking that makes us quietly envious on this side of the Channel.

Perhaps the most compelling reframe came from a researcher at Leuphana University, who asked a simple but transformative question: what if we stopped thinking of a ship as just a ship, and started thinking of it as a bank of materials? sea-help

We rather like that idea. At Clue Pony, it's the kind of thinking that gets us out of bed in the morning — applied to boats, fabric, and everything in between. We'll keep watching this space.

For over 150 years, the shipping forecast has been a staple of British radio.
