The concept is an important part of the Clue Pony vision so when we come across interesting articles and, in this case, academic research that helps us to talk about the subject then we’re all for it.

This paper, published in 2016 but recently discovered by the Cluepony team, is a fascinating read that goes a bit deeper into the potential for the circular economy. The focus of the article is Shipbuilding, and managing the end-of-life of boats, something we’ve discussed in earlier posts, but has relevance to what we’re trying to too.

However, the Jansson article provides great definitions, not least is that the term circular economy is a generic term for any industrial economy that produces neither waste nor pollution.

Remanufacturing is a key strategy within the circular economy. There are many definitions of remanufacturing, but the simplest is that it’s a process of returning a used product to at least its original performance. From a customer viewpoint, the remanufactured product can be considered the same as a new product.

This is what we’re trying to do with Cluepony, and why offering to take back tired and washed-out products and re-milling them with TeeMill is core to our mission.

What is Remanufacturing?

Remanufacturing systems can be seen as consisting of two interrelated processes, the external and internal processes. The external processes can be referred to as the process of coordinating the input of cores (used products, such as Cluepony Tees, Totes, sweats and hoodies) and the output of remanufactured products to customers - remilled products that are as good as the original.

A remanufacturing system like the one used by Cluepony clothing is limited to the input (returned cotton tees etc) and output from the actual remanufacturing processes provided by Teemil. This process transforms returned cotton products into remanufactured products through different manufacturing operations, reducing waste and pollution, which all adds up and means together we’re making a non-trivial difference every day.

So when you buy a product from Cluepony, look out for the Magic labels inside, or ask our FAQs to get answers to questions you might have about our circular economy policies, practices and processes, we’d love to hear from you!

Subscribe to our Newsletter to receive the latest articles, research and offers from Cluepony Clothing

Links: Closing the loop - An EU action plan for the Circular Economy COM/2015/0614 final — European Environment Agency (europa.eu)

Citation: Jansson, K. In this post we will look at one approach that's gaining popularity and is an idea we entirely support: remilled cotton. So, what exactly is remilled cotton? It's a process of taking pre-consumer cotton waste, such as scraps from clothing factories, and shredding it down to create new yarn. This new yarn can then be used to create new textiles, without the need for new raw materials
