And World Book Day is one of our favourite days of the year.

It’s a lovely time to reflect on how a great book can capture the essence of a specific time and place. And there are super examples of this in how the shipping forecast has been relayed in stories from around the world. Its unique language and structure have inspired many writers over the years.

For UK sailors the shipping forecast provided by the Met Office and broadcast by Radio 4, is divided into areas, each with its own name and code, such as Viking, Forties, and German Bight. The language used in the forecast is highly technical and often poetic, with phrases such as "isolated showers" and "squally winds." This unique blend of technical language and poetic imagery has inspired many writers and has become a cultural touchstone in Britain.

Outside of the UK, One example of a book (and one of my favourites) that uses the shipping forecast as a literary device is "The Shipping News" by Annie Proulx. For those who haven’t read it., the novel follows the story of a man named Quoyle, who moves to Newfoundland to start a new life after a series of personal tragedies. The changing nature of the shipping forecast is mentioned throughout the book, and the various areas provide a backdrop for Quoyle's journey of self-discovery.

Another book that explores the shipping forecast is "The Sea" by John Banville. The novel is set in a seaside town in Ireland and follows a man named Max as he returns to the place where he spent his childhood summers. The shipping forecast is used as a motif throughout the book, reflecting the ever-changing moods of the sea and the emotional landscape of the characters.

As we celebrate World Book Day, it's the perfect opportunity to explore the many ways in which literature can capture the essence of a place. Here are five books from the Clue Pony team that we like:

"The Shipping News" by Annie Proulx

"And Now the Shipping Forecast: A Tide of History Around Our Shores” by Peter Jefferson

“Attention All Shipping: A Journey Round the Shipping Forecast” by Charlie Connolly

"The Book of Tides” by William Thomson

Whether you're interested in the power of language, the beauty of the sea, or the complexities of human emotion, these books have something for everyone. However, unlike other objects, disposing of an old or unwanted boat is not as straightforward. Boats are usually made of materials that are not easily biodegradable, such as fibreglass or plastic, and disposing of them in landfills is not a viable solution. Recycling an old or unwanted boat is not only good for the environment, but it can also be a way to give back to the community.
